4th Grade Overview of January/February 2010

Essential Learnings

In fourth grade students have begun an in-depth study of three Spanish-speaking countries, (Chile, Puerto Rico and Spain) to compare/contrast regional geography, animals, and culture/customs with California. To date they have finished learning about two countries, Chile and Puerto Rico. Culminating activities included a Venn diagram as well as a travel brochure in Spanish. Additional activities included related songs, interactive dialogues, online exercises and games to further reinforce vocabulary.

Students have recently begun an in-depth study of three Spanish-speaking countries, (Chile, Puerto Rico and Equatorial Guinea) to compare/contrast regional geography, animals and customs with California. They just finished learning about their first country, Chile, and created a Venn diagram as well as a travel brochure in Spanish. Additional activities included related songs, interactive dialogues, online exercises and games to further reinforce vocabulary.

Basic and Practical Vocabulary Taught

Students at all grades are practicing how to say the date and describe the weather in Spanish daily. Key vocabulary includes: days of the week, months of the year, numbers, and weather words.

Looking forward in March and April:

Students will continue on their study of Spanish-speaking countries, (Chile, Puerto Rico and Spain), focusing on Spain as the final country, further comparing/contrasting regional geography, animals and culture/customs with California. To wrap up the unit, students will create a country facts wheel and book in Spanish as well as enjoy the traditional dish of paella as a 4th grade community.

In April students will begin a unit on the California Missions, focusing on daily life in the Missions, practicing telling time and describing daily activities of the Mission inhabitants. A culminating activity will include completing an illustrated journal in Spanish which depicts daily Mission life.

Ongoing language activities include related songs, interactive dialogues, online exercises and games to further reinforce vocabulary.
