4th Grade Overview of November/December 2009

Essential Learnings

In fourth grade students completed a unit on California regions through learning about California animals and their habitats.

Students have recently begun an in-depth study of three Spanish-speaking countries, (Chile, Puerto Rico and Equatorial Guinea) to compare/contrast regional geography, animals and customs with California. They just finished learning about their first country, Chile, and created a Venn diagram as well as a travel brochure in Spanish. Additional activities included related songs, interactive dialogues, online exercises and games to further reinforce vocabulary.

Basic and Practical Vocabulary Taught

Students at all grades are practicing how to say the date and describe the weather in Spanish daily. Key vocabulary includes: days of the week, months of the year, numbers, and weather words.

Coming soon:

Students will incorporate this vocabulary into daily weather announcements that will be featured on the Bel Aire TV show each morning.

Looking forward in January and February:

Students will continue on their study of Spanish-speaking countries, (Chile, Puerto Rico and Equatorial Guinea), focusing on Puerto Rico as the next country, further comparing/contrasting regional geography, animals and customs with California. To wrap up the unit, students will create a country facts wheel in Spanish. Additional activities include related songs, interactive dialogues, online exercises and games to further reinforce vocabulary
