
5th Grade Overview of January/February 2010

In fifth grade, students have been focusing on the use of practical conversational Spanish, in order to best prepare them for middle school. Recent vocabulary units include: the calendar, seasons, greetings and telling time. Class activities have included related songs, interactive dialogues, online exercises and games to further reinforce vocabulary and keep the class engaging for students.

Basic and Practical Vocabulary Taught
Students at all grades are practicing how to say the date, describe the weather and tell the time in Spanish daily. Key vocabulary includes: days of the week, months of the year, numbers, and weather words. They are also creating and performing dialogues around telling time at different places around the world.
New additions:
Student News Announcers are incorporating Spanish vocabulary into daily announcements that are featured on the Bel Aire TV show each morning.

Looking forward in March and April:
Students in fifth grade will focus on the use of practical conversational Spanish, finishing up our unit on using numbers and telling time in Spanish conversation. A culminating activity will include the creation of a mock travel itinerary to a Spanish speaking country which hour-by-hour descriptions of daily activities all in Spanish.
In mid March thru April, students will complete a social studies unit in Spanish around the theme of Daily Life in Colonial Times. Students will complete a journal in Spanish that incorporate their understanding of telling time in describing the daily activities of the colonists.
Ongoing language activities include songs, interactive dialogues, online exercises and games to further reinforce vocabulary and keep the class engaging for students.
