5th Grade Overview of November/December 2009

Essential Learnings

In fifth grade, students have completed the unit on ‘Self/Family’, which included vocabulary related to recreation, hobbies, favorite foods, their age and comparing/contrasting themselves with friends and family. As a culminating activity, students created a dialogue wheel and presented these in class. Additional activities include correlated songs, interactive dialogues, online exercises and games to further reinforce vocabulary.

Basic and Practical Vocabulary Taught

Students at all grades are practicing how to say the date and describe the weather in Spanish daily. Key vocabulary includes: days of the week, months of the year, numbers, and weather words.

Coming soon:

Students will incorporate this vocabulary into daily weather announcements that will be featured on the Bel Aire TV show each morning.

Looking forward in January and February:

Students in fifth grade will focus on the use of practical conversational Spanish, preparing them for middle school. Upcoming vocabulary units include: the calendar, seasons, parts of the body, greetings and telling time. In addition, units that best correspond with social studies curriculum in 5th grade will be carried out throughout the year. Additional activities will include related songs, interactive dialogues, online exercises and games to further reinforce vocabulary and keep the class engaging for students.
